MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS ESSENTIAL TO THE PERFORMANCE OF THE JOB
Training/degree required: Some college preferred
Skills required: Good typing skills, excellent proofreading skills (correcting scanned textbooks for optical character recognition errors in spelling and formatting), excellent organizational skills, science and math skills helpful--will be converting printed textbooks into alternative formats for students with disabilities

Computer skills required: Knowledge of Word, Excel, Abode Acrobat/Reader--ability to learn and use a variety of software/hardware applications converting text into alternative formats (eg. high speed scanner, OmniPage Pro, Kurzweil, screen readers and other adaptive software

Prior experience required: At least two years in the workplace using office skills, would be helpful if person has had experience working with students with disabilities

JOB DESCRIPTION
The production assistant will report to the Alternative Text Coordinator of the DS/LDC. S/he will work in the alt text library, scanning in books and other readings, proofreading and correcting scanned-in texts, formatting files to burn to CDs and record on cassette tapes, and posting electronic files into WebCT for students with a variety of print disabilities. The employee must have excellent computer skills and be able to learn and utilize a variety of software and hardware applications.

The employee must also have excellent proofreading skills -- be able to recognize and correct errors in text, formatting, spelling, etc. The work to be done is time sensitive, so the employee must be able to complete quality work on a timely basis. We are looking for at least a one year commitment because of the necessary training involved.

Hardware to be used includes: PC, a high speed scanner, high speed dubber, CD burner, 4-track tape players, Victor Reader (adaptive technology), etc. Software to be used includes: Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, TextAloud, ReadPlease, Microsoft Office Imaging, Omnipage Pro, Kurzweil, Victor Soft, etc. (Training will be provided.)

The employee should have good people skills as s/he will be working with a diverse group of students who have a variety of physical and cognitive disabilities. S/he will be responsible to check out materials and equipment to students and maintain a library database. This is a very responsible position and is key to the timely provision of alternative text, an accommodation mandated under the Americans with Disabilities Act
