One before, one after

Encounters from the back of the room
Wednesday, February 5, 2003
In modern poetry class today, a woman was reciting a poem by Emily Dickinson, and there were 12 lines, and on the 5th line, she started to stutter. And then she started slowing down, and then couldn't remember the words, and she burst into tears and was very upset. She kept saying that she knew the words.

Our professor held her and said it was okay and that she could go onto to talking about what the poem was about, and a guy was up there too trying to console her, and at first I thought he was in the class, but then I thought he might be her boyfriend, because it seemed like that. And then she stopped crying and talked about the poem, and afterwards, she and the guy left class. And I thought, I guess that is her boyfriend.

But then Dr. K seemed shaken up too, and she said that the guy was the woman's husband and that he was being deployed to go to war tomorrow. So they left to be together for the remaining time.
